Why do some men insist on wife taking his last name or he won't marry her?

I have heard the rational about this being she should respect me and honor me. Sometimes they just say she better or else. Some women say they want the same name as their children or that this is an expression of respect or family unity, then why don't he change his name to hers to show honor and respect? Why is it one sided don't your wife, mother, or sister deserve respect, honor, and love after all the carry the babies? Men are not the sole bread winners anymore and women are no longer considered property in which this originated. Please express the real reason for this attitude and not hostility. If you give an angry answer you only prove yor are angry and hostile and want to dominate. Thanks in advance for your responses.
