A relationship with your best friend?

I have known this guy since i was born, and we have a lot of common interests. (we both play trumpet, both love school, like similar sports, both want a big family etc.) We have always been best friends, but ever since i was little i have had a little bit of a crush on him. It really just hit me recently. So, based on yor experiences, does a dating relationship with your best friend work out? Thanks!
